Prematurity or being born too soon, is one of the world’s leading causes of deaths in children. Despite advances in medicine, the number of premature births are increasing worldwide and currently, more than 15 million babies are born prematurely every year. Malaysia is no different.

Premature babies are admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit soon after they are born. Many require respiratory support and close monitoring for many months before they are finally discharged home. Premature babies are more likely to develop serious complications such as cerebral palsy and chronic lung disease compared with full-term, healthy infants. Preterm babies are also more likely to have learning problems or require special intervention services. This places a lot of stress, uncertainty and hardship on the children and their families.

Worldwide, the month of November had been chosen as the month of observance to promote prematurity awareness. We have initiated an awareness programme in Malaysia, a collaboration between the Perinatal Society of Malaysia and University of Malaya, with an aim to raise awareness of the need to make lives better for vulnerable premature children and their families.

During this period, a run in conjunction with World Prematurity Day which falls on

the 17th of November, the SuperPreemies’ Run, will be organised on Sunday, the

18th of November 2018 at the UM Arena Stadium, University of Malaya,

where the public, parents of preemies all over Malaysia, and grown-up ex-preemies

will meet.
